Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Samie
From Transplant to Full-Fledged New Yorker
When Samie moved from New Jersey to New York City four years ago to pursue photography, she was excited about everything the city had to offer: art, music, fashion, and the endless opportunities to meet people and explore new experiences.
But like many people who move to New York, finding a deeper sense of connection wasn't always easy. Samie had always wanted to give back but wasn't sure where to begin. "Seeing everything happening in this country and feeling like I can’t do anything about it has been hard on me, but it also inspired me to take action and do whatever I can to promote positive change in the world."
After hearing about Bright Light from a friend, she joined her first event and quickly realized it was about more than volunteering. "I love all the Care Kit Assembly and Sandwich Making events. Laughs are always shared and I never leave without connecting with at least one person."
One of the moments that has stayed with her most happened while volunteering at Advent Community Lunch. "The genuine gratitude people have for the work we do as we hand out meals always warms my heart."
Over time, volunteering changed more than just how Samie spent her evenings and weekends — it changed her relationship with New York itself. "Now that I’m regularly making time to volunteer with Bright Light, I feel like I’ve graduated from transplant to full-fledged New Yorker."
For Samie, showing up has become about more than giving back. It has become about building a life and community within the city she now calls home.
